INTRODUCTIOn

Welcome to Our First Office Community

The First Office is a student-led initiative that helps community college students—especially those from low-income, first-generation, or underrepresented backgrounds—access internships in public service fields. Through placement support, career workshops, and mentorship, we’re building a more equitable future in government, policy, and civic leadership.

Guiding Principles

Our Vision & Mission

Our Vision

  • We envision a California where every community college student who wants to serve their community has the access, training, and support to do so.
  • Our long-term goal is to expand to community colleges across Los Angeles and, eventually, the state—creating a sustainable, student-led pipeline into public service that reflects the people it serves.

Our Mission

At The First Office, we Place students in internships with government offices, nonprofits, and civic institutions.
Host career workshops on resume writing, interviewing, and workplace navigation. Match students with mentors who guide them throughout their experience.
Create replicable tools to scale the program to other colleges and districts.

First Office Founder

Meet the Founder

Adler Dillman is a public policy student, organizer, and former intern in local government, Congress, and labor organizing. After transferring from a California community college, Adler launched The First Office in 2025 to help make early civic opportunities accessible to more students, regardless of income or connections.

Adler Dillman

Public Policy Student

I never thought I could work in public health while still in school. The First Office connected me with a local health department internship where I helped with real community outreach. It gave me purpose—and now I’m planning to pursue a degree in public policy. I finally see a future for myself in public service.

Jessica Miller Business Management Student

The First Office gave me my first real shot at working in a city council office. I was nervous at first, but the mentorship and training helped me grow fast. That internship changed how I saw myself—and now I’m applying to transfer with a clear goal to work in local government.

John Smith Marketing Graduate

As a first-generation immigrant student, I didn’t have any idea how to start a career in government. The workshops and mentorship helped me build confidence and understand that I belong in these spaces. The First Office didn’t just open doors—it helped me walk through them with my head held high.
